about

This is Fife. I don't know how long ago I wrote it, but I remember walking along Dickson Avenue and coming up with the first couple of lines. You can tell when I've written a song away from an instrument because the chords are usually quite simple. Usually a variation of 1, 6, 4, 5 (i.e. G, Em, C, D or C, Am, F, G). Also, when there's a clear-cut concept for the song the verses write themselves. All the instruments initially came in a lot earlier, but Rob pulled it all back a bit. I think we recorded iiiiiit...2nd. Or 3rd maybe.

It feels like I’ve been singing it for a long time, and I don’t really know how I’m going to play for I do. I always sounds the way I always play it though. I didn’t want to record any of the songs on this album in a way that was different from how I’d play if it was just me on a stage. That’s why it was helpful to have the band there. They just jumped onto what I was playing or played in the demos and didn’t go too crazy if it didn’t need to be crazy. Because I wasn’t on any lead instruments, the songs stayed true to what they were when they written. Simple little poems.

lyrics

When I look out at Fife at this time of night and all I can see is the elegant glow of a streetlight.
A wee nod to me she's still there, patiently waiting over the river.
The city is pretty, the city is great.
There's thousands of people that don't know my name but I know what I am and I know where I'm from, and I know that someday I'll be going home.
Where the hills go rolling down to the Forth.
Through The Kingdom of Fife ever glorious.
Music's not the only thing that makes me smile.
It just seems to make life feel much more worthwhile.
When I talk to myself, I talk in rhythm and key, cause I find it the best way to get through to me.
And I sing about loving the people I know.
Sing from the heart and I’m transported home.
I should’ve known that I’m no city slicker, that’s why when I sing my accent gets thicker.
So I hope that you can catch what I say, cause I won't sing any other way.
No
No
I hope that you can catch what I say cause I won't sing any other way.
When I look out at Fife at this time of night and all I can see is the elegant glow of a streetlight, a wee nod to me she's still there, patiently waiting until I return to my home.
